"Caring for You, Caring For Me" Caregiver Retreat

Caring for persons with chronic illness or disabilities is a rewarding endeavor, but often places extreme demands on the caregiver.  Caregivers can become overwhelmed trying to balance work, family and care giving demands, often resulting  in the neglect of their own well-being.

About the Retreat

"Only caregivers who make time to take care of themselves can be at their best to care for others"....Rosalynn Carter Institute

Merida Johns, PhD
Workshop Leader

Purpose:  The retreat is a time of respite for caregivers to refresh body and spirit and learn ways of taking care of themselves.

Who Should Attend:

  • Family members and friends who are caregivers for children, adult family members or friends

  • Professional caregivers such as nurses, therapists, social workers, physicians

Retreat Overview

The retreat begins with a formal 2-hour workshop allowing participants to discuss common issues, share ideas, identify the degree to which they are taking care of their own well being and determine ways to improve their self-care skills.  The workshop content and format are based on extensive research on caregivers by the Rosalynn Carter Institute (RCI).  Participants will be provided with materials developed by the RCI faculty and staff.

Time for reflection and relaxation is an important and integral part of the retreat.  Participants are provided two evenings and a complete unstructured day to fulfill their own well-being needs.

Workshop leader is Merida Johns, PhD.  Dr. Johns was a professor for over 25 years in Schools of Allied Health and was a tenured faculty member at The Ohio State University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Retreat Location

The environment of a retreat can be just as important as its content and format.

Caregivers live hectic lives with many distractions.  The retreat's calming location helps to  dissolve everyday stress and tension.

The Bundling Board:  Built in the mid-1890’s the Queen Ann Victorian provides an intimate atmosphere where guests feel welcomed and pampered.   Surrounded with antiques, vintage linens, and hand made quilts, guests enjoy a calming retreat in the inn’s well-appointed and charming rooms.  From fresh flowers to scented drawer linings and hand-ironed sheets, every detail to make a guest’s visit memorable has been considered.  Guests awake to the aroma of home-backed breads and muffins that complement a hearty breakfast served on china with linen tablecloths.

Rooms at the Bundling Board Inn each have a private bath.  Three rooms have queen-sized beds and one room has a double bed.

Woodstock:  The charming Woodstock Village complements the aesthetic for offering distinctive hospitality and lodging.  Retreat participants can stroll through tree-lined streets and shop and relax in the quaint charm of late 19th century Victorian buildings.   And antique hunting, golfing, and winter and summer sports activities are all available in the area.

In the evening there is lots to do to relax. The beautiful Romanesque-style Opera House features plays, concerts, and performances throughout the year.  Fine dining is available on the village square and folk music venues such as Off Square Music and the Mast House provide an evening of musical excitement.

Retreat Schedule

The retreat schedule acknowledges the importance of  both structured and "selfing" time in helping design an individual program for caregiver well-being.

Day 1

4:00-4:30:  Check in Bundling Board Inn

If arriving by Metra train, complementary transportation to the Inn is available.

4:30 – 6:30: Caring for You Caring for Me Workshop

It is critical for caregivers to take care of themselves.  As a caregiver, if you are not sensitive to and do not address your own needs, you may have little left to give to others.

This session is designed to help you recognize the importance of taking care and your self and to learn ways to do so, so you can continue to provide care to your loved one or clients.

The purposes of this session are:

  • To help you learn how to assess your “self-care” skills
  • To identify outcomes of NOT taking care of yourself
  • To identify and examine negative emotions you may experience
  • To identify effective coping skills
  • To examine your personal support systems
  • To recognize the roll of humor

Depending on group size session will be held at the Bundling Board Inn or other venue on the Woodstock Square.

Workshop leader is Merida Johns, PhD.  Dr. Johns was a professor for over 25 years in Schools of Allied Health and was a tenured faculty member at The Ohio State University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

6:30 p.m.: Dinner and evening on your own.

Restaurants:  The Bundling Board will be happy to make advance reservations for you for dinner.  A complete listing of restaurants located on the Woodstock Square will be mailed to you at the time of your registration.

Entertainment:  A complete listing of Opera House events and other entertainment venues will be mailed to you at the time of your registration.

Day Activities:

The day is totally unstructured.  This time is devoted to you!  Choose how you want to rejuvenate yourself and dissolve stress and tensions.  There are many activities to enjoy and participants can choose those that best their individual needs.

Ideas for Stress and Tension Reduction:

  • Read that good book you’ve put off reading:  Enjoy the quiet of your own room or the comfort of the Eva and Ida Gignac room to read that book or magazine that you haven’t had time to read.  If you haven’t brought along your own book there are many to choose from at the Bundling Board Inn.
  • Stroll through the Woodstock Square: Go back to a quieter time in the charming square.  Stroll through the various shops, grab a latte at one of the coffee shops, sit on the benches in the park square and people watch or read.
  • Take in a movie:  The Woodstock Cinema located in the historic district offers first run movies for the unheard of price of $3.00!  You can choose either matinees or evening features.
  • Tea on the Square:  Enjoy a cup of tea with scones or an entire lunch in the comforting atmosphere of Sweet Williams Tea Room
  • Pamper yourself with a massage:  The Bundling Board will gladly make an advance reservation for you at Harmony Falls, a therapeutic oasis located in the historic area, that specializes in relaxation, chronic pain relief, myofascial, and deep tissue massage
  • Search for Antiques:  here are several antique shops located within a five-mile radius of Woodstock.  On the historic square there are two shops devoted to antiques and several others that include antique items.
  • Exercise:
    • Walk: Walk through tree lined streets to the Emricson Park (about a mile from the Inn and Square).  Emricson Park has a walking trail through trees and meadows.  The Park also has several tennis courts available to the public.
    • Hike:  Three separate conservation districts are located within a 10-15 minute drive of the Bundling Board Inn.
